JANUARY

Now is the time for dormant spraying. Prevent insects (aphids, scales, etc.) and disease (apple scab, peach leaf curl, etc) from becoming a problem in spring and summer. Wash off trees using a spray nozzle, then spray with horticultural oil and either lime sulfur (not on apricots) or liquid copper.

Rose Planting Instructions

Thank you for selecting your roses from H & H Nursery. Our roses have been pruned, fertilized and planted for you in a biodegradable pulp pot. They are ready for immediate planting. Don’t forget to water them thoroughly as soon as you bring them home.

Location:
Roses do best in an area that receives at least six hours a day of full sun. Give them room to grow. Plant bush roses at least 3 ½ feet apart.

Soil Prep:
Roses need fertile soil with good drainage. Here’s the recipe we use.

The H & H Rose Soil Recipe:
30% Nurseryman’s Rose Planting Mix
20% Worm Gold Plus
50% native soil
plus
1 ½ cup Dr. Earth Rose Fertilizer
In heavy clay soils, add a layer of lava rock to the bottom of the hole.

Planting:
Make 4 vertical slices into the pot, starting from below the soil line. Cut an “X” on the bottom of the pot (do not line up cuts). You may add 4 tablets of Plant Success to the pot.*
Dig a hole 6-8 inches wider and deeper than the pot. Backfill the prepared soil mixture halfway into the hole. Set rose pot inside. Make sure the soil line in the pot is the same as ground level. Continue to backfill the hole. Tamp the soil firmly to remove any air pockets. Use the remaining mixture to make a water ring. The rim of the pot will be above ground, making it a secondary water basin.
Sprinkle Rose Cocktail around plant
Apply a 2 inch layer of mulch. We recommend Nurseryman’s Black Forest.

Rose Cocktail:
1 cup Gypsum
1 Tbs. Sul Po Mag
1 Tbs. Iron Plus
(Enough for 1 rose bush)

* Plant Success will increase beneficial bacteria for quicker breakdown of the pulp pot.

Don't forget use a pre-emergent lawn fertilizer!

We recommend Master Pro Pre-Emergent Weed Control & Lawn Food. Controls Crabgrass, Foxtail, Poa Annua and other annual grasses in established lawns.
